As part of the ongoing fight to deal with coronavirus, the government has announced this afternoon that their Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme (CJRS) that is keeping millions of people in jobs will be extended for a further month and will now run until 30 June 2020.
Running alongside the extension of social distancing measures that was announced yesterday, the CJRS will now be open for an extra month to provide businesses with the certainty they need.
The scheme allows firms to furlough employees with the government paying cash grants of 80% of their wages up to a maximum of £2,500. Recent guidance has increased the scope of the scheme and this further development is aimed at protecting as many jobs as possible.
As part of the announcement, the government has confirmed that the scheme will continue to be monitored to ensure people and businesses can get back to work as soon as it’s safe to do so to drive UK economic recovery. Further extensions to the scheme will be made as necessary.
